Anthracite mining next to the Nkomati River, Mpumalanga (click the link to watch the video)

In 2007, a joint venture between the Nkomati Anthracite (as subsidiary of JSE listed company Sentula Mining) and the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency built a new opencast anthracite mine in Madadeni, Mpumalanga, thereby diverting a tributary to the Nkomati River.

At the time, the mine had no valid environmental management programme, no environmental authorisation, and no water use licence.

Mining at Madadeni was suspended in 2011, first by the Department of Mineral Resources, and then by the Department of Water Affairs.

The Madadeni community is working to ensure that the mining company obtains all the required licences before it reopens the mine.

The film features Thelma Nkosi of the Madadeni Mining Committee.
