The lack of suitable habitat is the main issue facing leopard conservation in South Africa.
The encroachment of the human population has resulted in the formation of a number of leopard “strongholds”. Due to densities in these pockets, they are not suitable to receive any surplus. So, despite the general population decline throughout the country, certain areas are beyond their carrying capacities. It is from the fringes of these areas that leopards are relocated.
